How to get to Halong Bay?

About 170km away from Hanoi capital with 3 – 4 hours go by car, Halong Bay is easily accessible by different means of transportation.

This type of transfer is available for departing from Hanoi center only. The shuttle bus can be understood as “tourist bus”, leaving Hanoi around 08:00 and return at 12:00 from Halong Bay every day. If your hotel is located in Hanoi Old Quarter, you will be picked up from the hotel. Otherwise, you have to take a taxi to the meeting point. Shuttle bus costs from USD10 to USD30/person/one way.

If you arrive to Noi Bai Airport and want to travel to Halong city, rent a car with a driver. Several companies offer this service at a little less than USD 100/one way for private car from Noi Bai to Ha Long.

You can choose service of Halong Express train departs from Gia Lam Railway Station to Ha Long, USD20/single ticket.

From Danang, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City, you can fly either to Hanoi or Hai Phong Airport and get a car transfer to Halong Bay. From other Southeast Asia countries, you also need to fly into one of these two airports to get access to Halong Bay.

You can also travel to Halong Bay on helicopter which takes about 1.5 hour and it is only possible from Hanoi. This service is exclusively run by Northern Vietnam Helicopter Company and it is quite a costly option to reach Halong Bay.

Ha Long market, located on Bach Dang Street, in the Ha Long city center, is the largest market in Quang Ninh province. Built in 2003, Ha Long market has become a popular shopping place for locals and tourists alike. There are a variety of goods sold here.

Night market is near Bai Chay Beach, open every day from 6.00 pm until late night. It is very strange when you are heard about Sa Sung – a kind of sea worn. It lives deeply in the sand and only in Quan Lan island (Quang Ninh Province). So this is a quite expensive dish in Halong Bay. Fresh ¨Sa Sung¨ can be stir-fried with garlic or dried, grilled, roasted to eat with drinking alcohol. In addition, it is also used to make spices for noodle soup.

Another famous seafood dish in Halong is Snail. There are many legends associated with the name Bai Chay. According to one legend, when the fleet carrying food for the Yuan-Mongolian invaders led by Truong Van Ho came there, the Vietnamese troops and locals under the leadership of Tran Khanh Du set fire to it. The whole fleet was engulfed in fire. Meanwhile, the northeast wind blew hard and further added fuel to it. The fire was so fierce it burned down the forest on the western side of Cua Luc. Hence the name Bai Chay.

Another legend has it that the western side of Cua Luc used to be a wharf for seagoing boats. Acorn-barnacles firmly attached to these boats’ sides and underneath, and might wreck the boats. The local population had to use casuarinas leaves to burn acorn-barnacles. From Hon Gai and other neighboring places, people always see a blaze from there, so they called it Bai Chay.

A staple of any Vietnamese cook’s repertoire is “kho” or stewed meat, most often in a caramel sauce with fish sauce for that addictive sweet and salty combination. Especially, you can taste Vietnamese Clay pot fish, this dish is extremely yummy but it is not difficult to make it at home.

Ingredients:

- 750g firm white fish, cleaned and cut into chunks

- 150g palm sugar

- 3 tbsp Vietnamese fish sauce

- 1 tsp Knorr seasoning powder

- 3 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped

- 5 shallots, peeled and finely chopped

- A bunch of spring onions, chopped

- 1 tbsp cooking oil

- 400ml coconut water or water

- Chilies, coriander springs ( optional, to garnish)

Directions:

- In a bowl, place fish chunks and marinate with palm sugar, fish sauce, chopped white scallions, salt, pepper, Knorr powder, shallots, and garlic.

- To make the caramel sauce, place the remaining sugar in a saucepan with a splash of cooking oil and bring to a boil over medium heat. Keep swirling it in the pan so that it doesn’t burn for about 10 minutes, or until you have deep brown and glossy caramel liquid.

- Add the fish, adding water (or coconut juice) to just cover the fish, and bring to a boil. Skim the scum off.

- Add pepper and some of the chopped green scallion.

- Prepare your clay pot by putting down a layer of the scallion stalks. Add the fish mixture and continue cooking over medium heat for 15-20 minutes until the fish is cooked through. The sauce will reduce, becoming a beautiful golden brown and slightly sticky.

- Garnish with the remainder of the chopped green scallions, a chili (optional), and a few sprigs of coriander. Serve directly from the clay pot for a rustic presentation with jasmine rice.
