Quynh Lam Pagoda
Address: the pagoda is located on a range of hills at Trang An commune, Dong Trieu district, Quang Ninh province.
Characteristics: the pagoda was built under Ly dynasty. In the late 17 century and early 18, Quynh Lam pagoda became the largest Buddha centre in Vietnam.
The pagoda was restored through many dynasties, especially in 11 century and 14 century (in the late of Le dynasty) and In the late 17 century and early 18, Quynh Lam pagoda became the largest Buddha centre in Vietnam.
Under Ly dynasty, monk Khong Lo suggested to cast a bronze statue of Maitreya with 25 meters high and considered one of the four large treasures of Vietnam at that time. Moreover, there is stone stele of 2.5 meters high with a winding dragon pattern. But Quynh Lam pagoda became a important Buddhist center in the 14th century under abbot Phap Loa Dong Kien Cuong – second patriarch of Truc Lam Zen.
On the old foundation of Quynh Lam, in 1316, Phap Loa decided to build and establish Quynh Lam Buddha Institute with a monumental architecture. This is a centre of Buddha and a place to train Buddhist monks and nun. According to old stories, the pagoda was too large for steeds to run around its campus. However, through historical ups and downs, ancient works of the pagoda have been almost destroyed, just some exhibits such as: Big stone stele under Ly dynasty and tower garden.
The festival in Quynh Lam annually takes place from first and fourth of February (lunar calendar)
